Lyon Co. Sheriff's Office receives grant

The Spirit of Blue Foundation informed the Lyon County Sheriff's Office last week they had been named the recipient of the 2019 Trooper Cameron Ponder Memorial Grant.

This is a safety equipment grant, which includes ten tourniquets with duty belt cases for their deputies. The total value of the awarded equipment is $774.70.

According to a letter to the Sheriff's Office from Spirit of Blue, their mission is to enhance officer safety and vitality through meeting safety equipment and training needs, and this grant is intended to provide deputies with the necessary equipment to be protected from threats while serving their community.

Spirit of Blue will also replace any tourniquet used in the line of duty, whether on a deputy or member of the community, so no deputy who uses their tourniquet will have to go without one.

Trooper Ponder, the namesake of this award, gave his life in the line of duty September 13, 2015 in Lyon County.

The grant is primarily funded by a donation from Law Enforcement United, which is a national organization of active and retired law enforcement officers, as well as surviving family members of lost officers, who raise money for law enforcement causes.
